Former Mecklenburg official charged for Fund Fraud

Cindy E. Brady, the former director of a Mecklenburg County Christmas charity used the money meant for charity for personal purposes. She used a minimum of $30,000 to repay her credit card debts.

Brady was charged with 3 counts of duping government’s money. She continued her money fraud from 2007 to 2009 during her supervision of a Department’s social service program which used to buy Christmas gifts for needy children. She received thousands of dollars in advance from DSS to shop for gifts for kids who signed for the Giving Tree Program. Brady used a large portion of the money for her own benefit. She produced a lot of fake receipts and managed to escape.

The fraud came into light 1 year later after the department officials started looking into the matter of overspent that happened in the Giving Tree Program. A federal grand jury was looking deeply into the money fraud matter and after a year of trying to track down what went wrong they finally managed to nab the culprit.

Brady left the county in August and denies any such fraud. She wrote a memo in which she explained that the money was given to her by the county as an advanced retirement payment and was approved by her supervisors and has done nothing wrong.

After this incident the county officials have become more alert and a lot of changes are being made in the current financial matter handlings.
